Carex wahuensis ssp herbstii A Sedge Description (Code) Global Rank: Vulnerable; Subspecies Critically Imperiled (G3T1) Endangered Species Act Rank: Species of Concern (SOC)
Species Description Rhizomatous perennials forming dense clumps. Culms slender, up to 10 cm tall. Leaves narrow, 6-9 cm long, 1.5-2 mm wide. Spikes unisexual, with the terminal spike linear and staminate, and the 2 lateral ones broader, 8-15 mm long, 5 mm wide, and pistillate.
Habitat The only known occurrence of this taxon is in a moist habitat on a cliff face with vegetation consisting of grasses, sedges, and shrubs.
Global Range Carex wahuensis ssp. Herbstii has been recorded at only one site on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. This site is a small cliff face in the koolau range, inland of honolulu, and leeward (southwest) of the main spine of the mountain range. Only a few scattered plants have been seen at this site. There have not been any systematic searches for additional occurrences.
Global Threats Threats to the taxon include feral pigs and invasive alien plants.
Permanence Perennial.
Taxonomic Comments Genus cosmopolitan, species endemic to all of the main islands except niihau and kahoolawe, subspecies endemic to koolau mts. Of oahu.
