Kartesz (1999 Synthesis) recognizes this as distinct from Astilbe biternata. Some question the taxonomy of A. crenatiloba, believing it to be a variety of A. biternata. Has not been seen since 1888, so impossible to verify at present. Kartesz notes (pers. comm. to Larry Morse, 25Nov99) that "it is perhaps best to consider it [Astilbe crenatiloba] as a valid but extinct species from North Carolina and Tennessee."
