This taxon is possibly extinct in the wild. The type collection was made by Knudsen in the forests of Waimea, Kaua'i. Only three subsequent collections are known, from Koa'ie, Kaua'i, by botanists of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in 1994, 1997 and 2001. They only saw one to three mature plants, and a few juveniles. The last time the taxon was observed in the wild was in 2002 when Plant Extinction Prevention Program field botanist, Steve Perlman, observed just a single juvenile. The same site was last surveyed in January 2005 and there were no individuals remaining.

It has been reassured to "CR," so please move to the Possible extinct plants in the IUCN redlist which are either classified as Data Deficient or as Critically Endangered board.
