Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Extinct ver 3.1
Year Published: 2016
Date Assessed: 2016-07-12
Assessor(s): Clark, M.
Reviewer(s): Deans, S.
Contributor(s): Nyberg, B. & Wood, K.
Justification:
It appears that Cyperus rockii has not been seen since the type collection in the early 1900s. The cause of the extinction was most likely due to the impact of alien invasive plants and animals. While unlikely, it is possible that it may be rediscovered in this remote area.
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description: Hawaiian endemic, known only from the type locality in western Kauaʻi, near Waialae stream. This taxon was last collected in 1916.
Countries occurrence:
Regionally extinct:
United States (Hawaiian Is.)
Additional data:
♦ Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 0
♦ Number of Locations: 0
Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range.
Population [top]
Population: This species has not been documented since the type was collected in the early 1900s, and is presumed extinct.
Additional data:
♦ Number of mature individuals: 0
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: Cyperus rockii was collected in the early 1900s along Waialae Stream, an area that remains montane riparian forest, with some invasions of introduced plants.
The area is subject to disturbance by pigs.
Systems: Terrestrial
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): Threats that contributed to its extinction likely included alien invasive species including pigs, goats, and non native plants.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: This species has not been identified for conservation efforts, because it was believed to have gone extinct before conservation programs under the Federal Endangered Species Act were instituted.
