"This species was collected by Thunberg in 1775 in Cape Colony at an unspecified site, but which was very likely to be on the Cape Flats. Not collected since. There are excellent, well-preserved specimens of Osteospermum hirsutum in various herbaria, thus there is no doubt about its taxonomic validity. As it has not been reported for over 100 years and most of the Cape Flats have been developed, we conclude that this species is extinct." Source: redlist.sanbi.org/species.php?species=3193-52
