Phyllostegia micrantha Description (Code) Global Rank: Possibly Extinct (GH)
Species Description Probably perennial herbs. Leaf blades 6-10 cm long. 6-8 flowers per verticillaster.
Habitat No information on p. Micrantha's habitat was recorded, but it probably occurred (or still occurs) in the moist forests, like most phyllostegias of the waianae mountains.
Global Range Phyllostegia micrantha is endemic to the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. It is known only from the type specimen collected in 1910 in the waianae mountains. The specimen was collected in the district of popouwela, which is on the windward (eastern) side of mountains, in the south-central part of the mountain range. Popouwela lies partially on the nature conservancy's honouliuli preserve, and partially on the schofield barracks military reservation to the north of the preserve.
Abundance No details on the occurrence was recorded when the type specimen was collected.
Global Threats This part of the waianae mountains was in the past heavily impacted by grazing, feral goats, fires, and the planting of alien tree species. Nowadays the rare plants in the area are threatened by feral pigs and various alien plant species. Goats are still present in adjacent portions of the mountain range. Fire is still potentially a threat.
Permanence Perennial.
Taxonomic Comments New species from o'ahu, hawaii.
