"George Allan tells his students to never make a painting from someone else's photograph or an image in a magazine - the image must be truly their own. But the Kula artist broke his own rule for a recent painting of stenogyne haliakalae, a native Hawaiian vine with textured leaves and delicate pink flowers. To depict the plant, Allan used a photograph taken by retired Maui naturalist and forester Bob Hobdy 41 years ago - the last time the stenogyne haliakalae was ever seen. "Normally I wouldn't dream of using someone else's photograph," Allan said. "But it was a wonderful thing to do, because it's gone forever. It's extinct.""
