Encephalartos brevifoliolatus
family: Zamiaceae
This species was endemic to the Limpopo Province / South Africa.
At the time this species was described (1996), it was thought there were five male plants left in the wild. Seven plants were recorded in aerial surveys in 2001 but the population had declined to two plants when the area was resurveyed in 2004. A decision was made to translocate the remaining two plants. While preparations were being made, one of the plants was illegally removed and the last plant was cut into sections by poachers. The severed sections and trunk were removed and planted in a secure location elsewhere.
Originally occurred along the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The extent of occurrence and aea of occupancy were both less than 1 km².
