Scientific Name: Phyllostegia parviflora var. glabriuscula
Species Authority: A.Gray
Parent Species:
See Phyllostegia parviflora
Taxonomic Source(s): Wagner, W.L., Herbst, D.R. and Lorence, D.H. 2005 onwards. Flora of the Hawaiian Islands website. Available at: botany.si.edu/pacificislandbiodiversity/hawaiianflora/index.htm.
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) D ver 3.1
Year Published: 2016
Date Assessed: 2016-02-01
Assessor(s): Yoshioka, J.M., Sugii, N., Weisenberger, L., Keir, M., Sporck-Koehler, M., Caraway, V.L., Bruegmann, M. & Gon, S.M.
Reviewer(s): Chau, M.
Justification:
Phyllostegia parviflora var. glabriuscula is assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). The taxon is endemic to the island of Hawai'i, but there are currently no known individuals. If it still exists, this taxon must have a very small population which is likely to number fewer than 50 mature individuals. Attempts to relocate this taxon are required and if not found it should possibly be reassessed as Extinct.
Date last seen: 1900
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description:
Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, between 500 and 730 m elevation on the island of Hawai'i.
Countries occurrence:
Possibly extinct:
United States (Hawaiian Is.)
Additional data:
♦ Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 0
♦ Lower elevation limit (metres): 500
♦ Upper elevation limit (metres): 730

Population [top]
Population:
The taxon is extremely rare and possibly extinct. There are currently no known individuals.
Current Population Trend: Unknown
Additional data:
♦ Number of mature individuals: 0
♦ No. of subpopulations: 1
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology:
The taxon is a perennial herb found in Hawaiian mesic to wet forest.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s):
The major threats to this taxon include direct competition by invasive non-native plant species, and predation and habitat degradation by non-native animals, particularly include feral pigs and goats, which degrade the habitat and harm the plants through predation, trampling, and rooting for food. Alien plants also threaten the species by altering its habitat and competing with it for moisture, nutrients, light, and space. Rats pose a threat to the species through predation of its plant parts and fruits; and introduced slugs and snails threaten the species by feeding on its leaves, stems, and seedlings. Volcanic eruptions and lava flows also affect this taxon.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions:
The taxon is on the U.S. Endangered Species List, and also on the State of Hawai'i Endangered Species List. There are currently no known individuals, but it was known to occur in what is now Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Attempts are required to relocate this taxon.
