"Brachystelma canum was last collected in 1956. Several attempts to relocate this species in the wild have failed. It is possibly extinct due to habitat loss to agricultural expansion. ... The area where this species was last recorded has been extensively transformed as a result of the expansion of commercial agriculture. It is likely that the population at the type locality has been lost to ploughing. ... This species is only known from the type collection, dating from 1956. The locality is well-documented. Several attempts to relocate this species at the type locality and surrounding areas have been futile (Hahn 2013). It is possibly extinct due to habitat loss."
