Scientific Name: Cycas fugax K.D.Hill, T.H.Nguyên & P.K.Lôc
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) A2cd; B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2010
Date Assessed: 2009-10-31
Assessor(s): Osborne R., Hill K.D., Nguyen H.T. & Phan K.L.
Reviewer(s): Donaldson, J.S. & Bösenberg, J.D.
Justification:
Most of the habitat of this species has been destroyed for agriculture or urbanization, resulting in a population reduction of more than 80% in the last three generations. It is regarded by some authorities (e.g. Whitelock 2002) as possibly extinct in the wild. The extent of occurrence is also extremely small and if populations survive they are extremely fragmented and there is continuing decline.
Date last seen: 2004
Previously published Red List assessments:
2003 – Critically Endangered (CR)
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description: This species is known only from Phu Tho province in the north of Viet Nam. Occurs at 200 m asl.
Countries occurrence:
Possibly extinct:
Viet Nam
Additional data:
♦ Lower elevation limit (metres): 200
Range Map: Click here to open the map viewer and explore range.
Population [top]
Population: This species is apparently a very rare and restricted species and is known only from a severely threatened habitat. It is not known if any plants are still extant in the wild.
Current Population Trend: Decreasing
Additional data:
♦ Number of mature individuals: 0-500
♦ Population severely fragmented: Yes
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: This species originally grew in closed evergreen forests on low hills of orange-brown alluvial loam. Almost all of this forest on this substrate has been cleared for tea, eucalypt, and Acacia plantations.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Generation Length (years): 40
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): Almost all of the forest habitat on this particular substrate has been cleared for tea, eucalypt and Acacia plantations. The species has also been impacted by urban expansion.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: This species is listed on Appendix II of the CITES Appendices. This species is urgently in need of both close study to evaluate its status, and protective measures to save it from extinction.
