Synonym(s):
Delissea subcordata H.St.John
Taxonomic Source(s): Wagner, W.L., Herbst, D.R. and Lorence, D.H. 2005 onwards. Flora of the Hawaiian Islands website. Available at: botany.si.edu/pacificislandbiodiversity/hawaiianflora/index.htm.
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) D ver 3.1
Year Published: 2015
Date Assessed: 2015-08-13
Assessor(s): Keir, M., Portner, T., Caraway, V.L. & Kwon, J.
Reviewer(s): Chau, M. & Bruegmann, M.
Justification:
Delissea takeuchii is assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). The taxon is endemic to the island of Oʻahu in the Wai‘anae Mountains. The last known wild plants were observed in 1987, but there is still a possibility that it could be found in remaining habitat. This qualifies the taxon to a ranking of Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) under criterion D.
Date last seen: 1987

Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology:
The taxon is a perennial shrub found in lowland mesic forest.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: There are no known uses for this species.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s):
The major threats to this taxon include direct competition by invasive non-native plant species, especially Psidium cattleianum and Clidemia hirta, and predation and trampling by non-native animals, particularly pigs. It is ranked as vulnerable to climate change (index 0.692 in Fortini et al. 2013), due to loss of habitat.
