Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild) D ver 3.1
Year Published: 2015
Date Assessed: 2015-08-14
Assessor(s): Lorence, D.H. & Kishida, W.
Reviewer(s): Clark, M. & Bruegmann, M.

Facilitator/Compiler(s): Schatz, G.E.
Justification:
This species is Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild). This species was only known from seven individuals in one supbpopulation in the wild and it is presumed extinct due to a landslide. Nine accessions grown from seed from the original plants in the wild are in living collections at the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) on Kaua'i, and there are 69,300 seeds in storage
Date last seen: 1998

Range Description:
Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, at 366 m elevation on the island of Kaua'i.
Countries occurrence:
Possibly extinct:
United States (Hawaiian Is.)
Additional data:

Population [top]
Population: This species is possibly extinct in the wild.
Current Population Trend: Unknown
Additional data:
♦ Number of mature individuals: 0
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: This species was known from mesic forest at an elevation of 366 m on the north facing slopes of Mt. Haupu in southern Kaua'i. The habitat consists of degraded mesic forest with Pisonia spp., Diospyros sandwicensis, and Acacia koa as tree species.
Systems: Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Generation Length (years): 3
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: This species is not being utilized for trade purposes.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): The major threats to this taxon included direct competition by invasive non-native plant species (Caesalpinia decapetala, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Psidium cattleianum, Passiflora laurifolia, alien grasses), and predation and habitat degradation by non-native animals, particularly pigs and goats. Threats also include landslides.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: This species is possibly extinct in the wild. Surveys need to be conducted to determine if there are any extant populations or individuals. Since there are individuals in ex situ cultivation and seeds in storage, these could be used for reintroduction.
