Scientific Name: Myriophyllum axilliflorum Baker
Taxonomic Source(s): Perrier de la Bathie, H. 1950. Halorrhagacees. Fl. Madagasc. 155: 1–13.
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2017
Date Assessed: 2016-05-02
Assessor(s): Rabarimanarivo, M. & Faranirina, L.
Reviewer(s): Manjato, N.
Contributor(s): Ravololomanana, N.
Justification:
The species has an estimated area of occupancy of 9 km² and is present in one location. The only known subpopulation occurs outside protected areas and it experiences continuing decline due to agriculture activities and urban developments. Hence it is assessed as Critically Endangered and Possibly Extinct. Further field research and monitoring for this species is recommended.
Date last seen: 1928
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description: The species is endemic to Madagascar, where it has been recorded from a single locality in the regions of Analamanga (Ambohipo, Antananarivo) at 1270 m Asl. However we assume that this subpopulation at Ambohipo has been extirpated through urban development, although the species is probably under-collected and could possibly be found in suitable habitats nearby. (Madagascar Catalogue, 2016)
Countries occurrence:
Native:
Madagascar
Additional data:
♦ Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 9 ♦ Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO): Yes
♦ Estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) - km2:
♦ Number of Locations: 1
♦ Lower elevation limit (metres): 1270
♦ Upper elevation limit (metres): 1270

Population [top]
Population: There is one known subpopulation of this species. The most recent collection was made in 1928 from Ambohipo. (Madagascar Catalogue, 2016)
Current Population Trend: Decreasing
Additional data:
♦ Continuing decline of mature individuals: Yes
♦ Continuing decline in subpopulations: Yes
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology:
The subpopulation of this species grows outside protected area network, and the available habitat is transformed for aquaculture. (Madagascar Catalogue, 2016)
Systems: Freshwater
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: There is no information on the use or trade of this species.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): The species is threatened by habitat destruction due to urban development (including quarries for brick-making, water use and management, transport infrastructure), agriculture, aquaculture, invasive non-native plant species, sedimentation and pollution.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: The species is not present within the protected areas network.
