Scientific Name: Ammannia calcicola (H.Perrier) S.A.Graham & Gandhi
Synonym(s):
Nesaea calcicola H.Perrier
Taxonomic Source(s): Graham, S. A. T. & K.N. Gandhi. 2013.. Nomenclatural changes resulting from the transfer of Nesaea and Hionanthera to Ammannia (Lythraceae). Harvard Pap Bot. 18(1): 71–90.
Assessment Information [top]
Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v) ver 3.1
Year Published: 2017
Date Assessed: 2016-05-06
Assessor(s): Rabarimanarivo, M. & Lantoarisoa, F.
Reviewer(s): Phillipson, P., Manjato, N., Rakotonirina, N. & Letsara, R
Facilitator/Compiler(s): Andriambololonera, S. & Ravololomanana, N.
Justification:
Ammannia calcicola has an area of occupancy of 18 km² (within the limits for Endangered status under the criterion B2) and occupies in two locations, falling within the limit for Endangered status. All subpopulations occur outside the protected area network and it experiences continuing decline due to agriculture activities and soil erosion. Hence it is assessed as Endangered. The only known collections of the species were collected more than 100 years ago, from an area that has already been subjected to severe degradation for much of this time, and it has possibly been reduced to a single location or even become extinct.
Geographic Range [top]
Range Description: The species is endemic to Madagascar, where it is only known Maevarano and from the Antanimena Plateau between the Betsiboka and the Mahavavy Rivers, near the estuary of the Betsiboka (Boeny region) (Madagascar Catalogue, 2016).
Countries occurrence:
Native:
Madagascar
Additional data:
♦ Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - km2: 18 ♦ Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO): Yes

Population [top]
Population: There are two known subpopulations of this species, it was last documented in 1908 (Madagascar Catalogue, 2016).
Current Population Trend: Decreasing
Additional data:
♦ Continuing decline of mature individuals: Yes
♦ Continuing decline in subpopulations: Yes
Habitat and Ecology [top]
Habitat and Ecology: This herb grows in damp places.
Systems: Terrestrial; Freshwater
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat: Yes
Use and Trade [top]
Use and Trade: There is no information on the use or trade of this species.
Threats [top]
Major Threat(s): Both subpopulations occur outside existing protected area network and are threatened by habitat degradation or destruction through soil erosion and sedimentation due to nomadic grazing and other agricultural activities, and by wildfire.
Conservation Actions [top]
Conservation Actions: This species is not known to be present within the protected area network. No conservation actions for the species are known.
