Range Although it is doubtful whether any pure material of this subspecies still exists, its characters are frequently seen in hybrid populations at Peak Dale. The taxon was at one time distributed on the central ridge between 400 and 700 m. There is also a tree of questionable identity found in Deep Valley. The genus consists of four species, all endemic to St Helena.

The Gumwood (Commidendron robustum) is Saint Helena's 'national-tree', the subspecies gummiferum is extinct, but some plants of hybrid origin, in which gummiferum may be included, at least genetically, may still occure at Peak Dale. The 'pure' form is lost anyway. The date of its extinction seems to be unknown. (Commidendrum robustum ssp. gummiferum), the flowers were white www.extinct.minks-lang.de/1pflanzen/a.plantsarten/commidendrum.robustum1.htm
